The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will be taking some of this island’s school children back to their African roots during the month of February, which is being observed as African History Month.

According to Education Officer with responsibility for General Studies and coordinator of the event, Celeste Clarke-Cox, celebrations will take the form of six one-day cultural presentations entitled "Let’s Celebrate Afrika", to be held at secondary schools across Barbados.

The first event will be held on Wednesday, February 3, at the Princess Margaret School, followed by another at Harrison College on Tuesday, February 9. The third cultural presentation will take place on Thursday, February 11, at the St. James Secondary School, while the fourth will be held at the Christ Church Foundation School on Tuesday, February 16.

The last two sessions are scheduled for Thursday, February 18, at Combermere School and Thursday, February 23, at the Lester Vaughan School.?? All presentations will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m.

On each occasion, schools will showcase students’ work that reflects our African-Barbadian heritage. This year’s focus will be on the use of local plants for food and medicinal purposes.

All primary and secondary schools located in the zone of the host schools have been invited to attend and participate in the cultural proceedings.
