The Ministry of Health is advising members of the public planning to travel to the deep interior or hinterland of Guyana and other areas where malaria is endemic, to get anti-malaria tablets prior to travelling, as a precautionary measure.??

The malaria prophylaxis may be obtained from health care providers.

The Ministry of Health is also reminding members of the public to get vaccinated prior to travelling to yellow fever endemic areas. Travellers are advised to call the Winston Scott Polyclinic at 436-3800, extension 3205 or 3265 to make arrangements for the yellow fever vaccine, as soon as their travel arrangements are known, or at least three weeks prior to their date of departure.

Persons travelling on non-Government business will be charged a fee of $25 for this vaccine, while fees will be waived for those travelling on Government business.????

Individuals receiving the vaccination will be issued with a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.

The Certificate is valid only if the yellow fever vaccine used has been approved by the World Health Organisation, and if the Vaccine Centre has been approved by the National Health Authority (Ministry of Health) for the area in which the centre is located and so recorded by the World Health Organisation.??

The Winston Scott Polyclinic is the only approved centre for yellow fever vaccination in Barbados. The vaccine is valid for a period of 10 years.

Areas endemic for malaria and yellow fever include some countries in South and Central America, Central and Sub Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
