Years of hard work and dedication by public sector workers will be rewarded next week when the Ministry of Labour and the Civil Service hosts the inaugural GIVE awards ceremony at the Sherbourne Conference Centre.
The event comes off on Friday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m.

The aim of GIVE is to improve the attitude and work ethic of Barbadian employees and promote standards of appropriate behaviour in the workplace. It focuses on areas such as attendance/absenteeism, integrity, deportment, performance, communication and customer service.
According to Permanent Secretary, Carston Simmons, for too long there has been a negative perception of public sector workers.
“This negative perception has blurred the fact that these workers sometimes operate in stressful conditions, work tirelessly and fundamentally, go beyond the call of duty to ensure the effective delivery of public services,” he said.

Mr. Simmons explained that awards will be presented to employees from each ministry as well as workers from the external employment programme, that is, the Canadian Farm Labour and Hotel Workers’ Programmes.
He pointed out that the awardees must display the attributes of punctuality, productivity and good deportment. In addition, they must be cooperative, demonstrate a respect for authority, have good relations with staff and the public and strongly adhere to public sector procedures.
