The Ministry of the Environment is evaluating the drainage needs of districts affected by flooding. To this end, Minister of the Environment, Water Resources & Drainage, Denis Kellman, and officials from his Ministry, toured some of the flood-prone areas in St. Philip last Wednesday to determine solutions for residents.
Director of the Drainage Division, Keith Barrow, mentioned that work was ongoing and had been completed by the Division at Woodbourne Park and this included the placement of additional wells into the area. ??He added that work would continue there, to efficiently alleviate any problems.
Mr. Barrow, along with Permanent Secretary, Lionel Weekes, representatives from various departments within the Ministry and other took part in the four-hour tour.
They were also accompanied by parliamentary representative for the area, Dr. David Estwick, who identified sites at Evelyn Road, Hamden Road and Market Road as areas of major concern.
Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, and representative for the constituency of St. Philip South, led the latter part of the tour, where he identified Harmony Lodge, St. Martin’s, Atlantic Park and Long Bay Development as flood-prone districts of concern. ??He also identified a green space in Ruby Park as an area that would be useful for the community.??
Another similar location in the Marchfield development was also earmarked as one which should be beautified for the benefit of its residents.
The final stop was a community area in Emerald Park, which is currently under development by the NCC and should be completed within the next month.
This tour follows a similar one conducted in St. Lucy and St. Peter last month, which also aimed to identify flood prone areas in those parishes. (NH/BGIS)
