The Barbados Public Service now has vision and mission statements which reinforce the commitment of officers to provide excellent service to the public.

The Vision Statement is: The Barbados Public Service: a model of excellence in innovation, service and leadership.

The mission tenets are: We will come to work every day to make a difference in the lives of our people; We will do so by delivering the services in a creative and caring way that is fair and honest; We will treat everyone how we would want to be treated; and Excellence shall always be our hallmark!

Director General, Human Resources in the Ministry of the Public Service, Gail Atkins, said public officers would continue to work to make the statements a reality.

Ms. Atkins continued: “Our Vision Statement inspires us to be a model of excellence as we assist people at home and abroad.  The mission tenets serve as a call to action, reminding us who we are and why we have chosen this noble career of serving our country, citizens, and those who interact with us on the world stage.

“The call to make a difference in the lives of our people requires public officers to be caring, fair, honest and creative.  We need to continue to focus on finding solutions and delivering them with world-class service, always treating fellow citizens with respect.  Excellence must be at the centre of every initiative, programme and project undertaken.”

Giving the background to the creation of the vision and mission statements, Ms. Atkins explained that public officers participated in the “visioning cafes” with the Learning and Development Directorate last year, and several proposals were suggested.

The statements will soon be produced and displayed in government offices and on all correspondence and emails.

Meanwhile, public officers will be invited to participate in Independence celebrations this Friday, November 27, where they will get an opportunity to compete for branded memorabilia which will be imprinted with the mission and vision statements.
