As World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14, the Diabetes Association of Barbados and the Barbados Diabetes Foundation have planned a month of activities to bring national attention to this chronic disease.

The Diabetes Mobile Unit will be going around the island offering health checks and recruiting members, beginning Saturday, November 8, at the Rubis Service Station, Oistins, Christ Church, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Mobile Unit will be at the Eric Holder Jr. Municipal Complex, Tamarind Hall, St. Joseph, on Thursday, November 13, also between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Later that day from 4:00 p.m., it will visit the Bay Garden in Oistins, Christ Church.

On Friday, November 14, the Mobile Unit will do a whistle stop tour around the island from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and from 4:30 p.m., it will be stationed at Simpson Motors, Warrens, St. Michael. It returns to Simpson Motors on Saturday, November 15, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

A highlight of the month will be a public lecture scheduled for the Bay Garden at Oistins on Thursday, November 13 at 6:00 p.m. The presenter will be Dr. Wes Youngberg, a clinical nutritionist and lifestyle medicine specialist from California in the United States. His topic will be: Turning Good Genes On and Bad Genes Off: Good News About Mastering Your Genetic Risk.

On Friday, November 14, there will be a special activity dubbed Free Grab and Go Healthy Breakfast in Independence Square, Bridgetown between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., health checks and a membership drive will be conducted at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Martindales Road.

Everyone is invited to register for the 5K run and walk on Saturday, November 15, which starts at the Maria Holder Diabetes Centre for the Caribbean at Warrens, St Michael, at 6:00 a.m.

The following Saturday, November 22, there will be a variety concert at the Foundation School Hall, Church Hill, Christ Church, starting at 6:00 p.m. And, on Thursday, November 27, an Open Day/Market Day will be held at the Diabetes Association of Barbados??? headquarters, Corner Jessamine Avenue, Beckles Road, St. Michael, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The final activity for the month will be a Fun Walk which starts at the King George V Memorial Park, St. Philip, on Saturday, November 29, at 6:00 a.m.
