For the third consecutive year the Ministry of Social Transformation will honour this nation’s elderly people during an entire month, in acknowledging their significant contribution to our development.

Using the theme “Our Elderly, Gems of Our Nation”, the Ministry has planned celebrations from September 1-28 beginning with a Church Service on Sunday, September 3, at New Dimensions Ministries held at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic.  The following day, persons can listen to the VOB radio programme “Afternoon Delight” which will discuss matters pertinent to the aged.

Earlier in the day, viewers of the CBC – TV Morning Barbados programme could learn more about the National Consultation on Elder Abuse. 

On Thursday, September 7, seniors will showcase their athletic skills during a sports day at the St. Lucy District Hospital, while on Saturday, September 9, there will be a five-kilometre walk from the Garrison Savannah to Queen’s Park.

Thursday, September 14, will be cake sale and social day at the National Assistance Board (NAB) grounds and on Saturday, September 16, there will be an open day and variety concert at the St. Philip District Hospital.

A Health Fest is scheduled for Thursday, September 21, at the NAB and the senior citizens will be treated to a cruise on board the Harbour Master on Tuesday, September 26. They will take to the high seas on Wednesday, September 27, for a seven-day Caribbean cruise onboard the Carnival Destiny.  Celebrations will end with a hardball cricket match between persons 45 years and over at the Empire Cricket Club, where the Barbados Cricket Association will take on the Barbados Cricket League.
