The Bureau of Gender Affairs has joined forces with the St. Thomas We Gatherin’ Committee to host Moonlight Pun Stick on Sunday, March 8.

The evening of drama, dance, songs, spoken word and stories of life in the St. Thomas community takes place at the Welchman Hall Play Park, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The first part of the programme will be dedicated to observing International Women’s Day and celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Women.

It will include a variety of entertainment as well as addresses by Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Cynthia Forde, and representatives of the Chinese Embassy, the United States Embassy, the Canadian High Commission and the United Nations Development Programme.

The second part of the programme will focus on community life in St. Thomas, and this will be shared through song, dance and story-telling.

Moonlight Pun Stick is a term based on Bajan folklore about Ossie Moore.  It tells the story of the introduction of the street light in a rural community. Fascinated by the light on the electricity pole, Ossie Moore ran with excitement to inform the residents that there was “moonlight pun stick”.

The term became more than a description of an electric light pole, developing into a part of rural life where residents would gather under the “moonlight pun stick” to share stories and tell jokes. It is this element of community life that the residents of St. Thomas intend to recreate during the event.
