Barbados needs more cultural events.

So says Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, as he addressed at the Caribbean Fine Art Fair (CaFA) and Symposium held last week at the Old Spirit Bond, Bridgetown.

Emphasising that such activities were a necessity, Minister Lashley pointed out that more cultural events would provide a platform for existing artistes to display their work and "heighten the interest of the general populace in the arts."

He explained that one of the objectives of the Barbados National Policy was to attain a higher level of cultural awareness among Barbadians.??

"The artist’s role in this cultural revolution is very important", he said, adding that without the involvement of the creative practitioner, accomplishing policy initiatives could not be possible.

Stating that CaFA was timely since it showcased art, music, film and performance, Mr. Lashley pointed out CaFA also celebrated the contribution of Caribbean art and artists as well as the increasing importance that both played in the international arena.

He praised the organisers for including artwork from 35 Caribbean artists, some of whom hailed from Martinique, Guyana, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Dominica and Barbados.??

"The inclusion of so many of our regional counterparts in this initiative is certainly heart-warming and speaks well of the future of the region in terms of our collaborative efforts and the united approach to the development of various aspects of our culture," Minister Lashley noted.
