The Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), organisers of the popular Agrofest, are seeking to have more youth involved in next year’s national exhibition.
Coordinator, Thedore Fraser, explained that one of the Society’s mandates was to encourage more young persons to get involved in the sector and he proffered the view that participation in Agrofest could be one avenue to do so.
Mr. Fraser was speaking to the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) recently as the BAS put the final touches on its annual Agrofest review at the ???The Grotto’, Beckles Road, St. Michael.
As part of the national exhibition, the BAS is hosting a poster competition for local primary schools. All school children are invited to view the exhibits during the first day of the event.
Mr. Fraser revealed that BAS officials would be working to develop some new programmes aimed at generating interest in agriculture throughout the year.
"We are looking to have some new competitions devised for the children that will run throughout this year and lead into Agrofest 2013. We don’t want it to be a situation where the children are only coming to the exhibition for that brief period or only the weekend but we want to have ongoing programmes throughout the year catering to these children because we recognise it’s a developmental process. One of our objectives for Agrofest has been to get more youth involved in agriculture again and it’s one of the mandates we are going to stand by," the Coordinator pointed out.
Agrofest 2012 ran from February 24 to 26 in Queen’s Park and was held under the theme Renewable Energy: Powering Agriculture to Success.
