Press conference re: COVID-19 and national cleanup updates – April 16, 2021. (PMO)

Come Monday, April 19, Barbadians will once again be able to visit most fish markets across the island and purchase fish, after they were closed as a result of ash fall from the La Soufriere volcano.

Minister of Home Affairs, Information and Public Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams, said today that a major cleanup and washing down of the markets was expected to be completed by this evening.

That work should continue into tomorrow, Saturday, April 17, with a view to having the markets reopened on Monday, April 19.

“The vendors have been working closely with the staff, and I wish to commend the fisherfolk, who have banded together in this exercise to do what is in their best interest. Government can’t do it all and vendors have been working closely with the staff and we want to thank them for that cooperation,” he said.

However, the Minister pointed out that challenges were being experienced at the Consett Bay and Millie Ifill fish markets because of the ash blowing downhill from the road into these markets.

While the Ministry of Transport, Works and Maintenance was working to address the challenges at those markets, Mr. Abrahams said the Payne Bay Fish Market would be closed until further notice.

That market, he said, was experiencing challenges due to the need to clean up the ash, which was being complicated by the ongoing roadworks along Highway One.
