Teachers from primary and secondary schools are currently in training at the St. Leonard???s Boys??? Secondary School to enhance their skills in the creation of wooden manipulatives.
The annual workshop is being conducted by the Media Resource Department (MRD) and will afford teachers the opportunity to create wooden resources for use in the classroom.
???It will allow teachers to unleash their creativity and innovation, as they design some of the most durable teaching resources likely to complement classroom instruction,??? said Coordinator for the workshop and Audio Visual Aids Officer with the MRD, Sandra Boyce.
The manipulatives/teaching aids will be used in all schools for children ages three to 11, whether they are in the infant department, special needs classroom or experiencing challenges in the main stream. The pieces will also be used to encourage reading, develop basic Maths concepts and assist students in counting in Spanish.
Last year, teachers who attended the training workshop developed, among others, Spiderman puzzles; a map of Barbados; a Spanish snake game; an English alphabet; a Turtle to help children count in 5???s and a Days of the Week board game.
The workshop continues until Monday July 15, with a closing ceremony and display of items scheduled for that day from noon at the St Leonard’s Boys School, Richmond Gap, St. Michael. Deputy Chief Media Resource Officer, Burkley Lowe will address the participants and present certificates at the close of the workshop.
