The Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) will be conducting a household survey across all 11 parishes in Barbados, over a six-week period beginning this month.

The Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) is an international household programme developed by UNICEF and implemented in cooperation with, the United Nations Population Fund and UN Women.

A Survey of 120 districts will commence from May 14, and is expected to last for 40 days – including weekends and public holidays, when householders are likely to be found at home.

Information will be collected about the health, education and well being of women and children as well as on child protection and HIV/AIDS.

Questionnaires will seek information on a number of areas including: the number of persons in the household; education, water and sanitation; household characteristics; child labour and discipline. A sample of the salt used in the household will also be requested. This will be administered by the MICS field personnel, who have been trained in performing the tests for two types of salt.

In addition, specific questions will be asked of all women from the age of 15 to 49 years on: access to mass media, child mortality, maternal and newborn health; post-natal health; attitudes toward domestic violence; marriage/union; Contraception; and life satisfaction.

Furthermore, data will also be gathered on children under the age of five years, who resides in the selected. The weight and height of these children will also be taken.

MICS is designed to provide a tool to monitor progress towards national goals and global commitments aimed at promoting the welfare of children, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It facilitates the collection of national statistical data on some areas of the MDGs that are not currently available from any other source.

The BSS has stated that this information will be used to compile national statistics and indicators about the situation of children and women in Barbados.

All interviewers and MICS field personnel will carry ID cards, bearing their pictures and the logos of BSS, UNICEF and MICS.

All information will be treated in the strictest confidence. The BSS has thanked the public for its cooperation in this exercise.
