Press briefing on Independence Events – November 18, 2021. (PMO)

In celebration of the island’s move to republicanism and to celebrate Independence, the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) is undertaking an Independence Parish Mural Project, which involves the installation of four murals in Holetown, Speightstown, Oistins and Bridgetown.

This was among the cultural activities highlighted by its Chief Executive Officer, Carol Roberts-Reifer, as she addressed an online press conference hosted on Thursday by Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Senator Kay McConney, to outline the country’s plans for the transition to a republic on November 30.

Acknowledging that these projects had already begun, Mrs. Roberts-Reifer said she anticipated all murals would be completed by November 25.

Elaborating on the implementation plan for the Independence Parish Mural Project, she said: “In Bridgetown, it is going to be the fence in front of the Fisheries Department in Bridgetown. In St. James, it’s going to be opposite the fence at the Trent’s Community Centre…. The artist for Bridgetown is Shane Eastmond; the artist for Holetown is Shari Nicholls. In Oistins, the mural will be installed on the main road, which is diagonally opposite Granny’s restaurant…, and the artist is Kevon Hall, and the fourth mural will be installed on the grounds of the Speightstown playing field in St. Peter, and the artist for that project is Carlisle Trotman.”

She further noted that there would be additional murals across the island, a project which commenced last week and was anticipated to also finish by the end of next week.

These murals will be at the St. Lucy’s Parish Church, in St. Lucy; at Hillaby Turners’ Hall Primary School, St. Andrew; in St. John at the St. John Post Office; in St. Joseph, at Andrew’s Sugar Factory; in St. Thomas, near the mini roundabout, in Jackson; in St. George in the Glebe; in St. Philip, on the Princess Margaret School wall, and in St. Michael at the Israel Lovell Foundation building.
