Eight lectures are on the cards for the Barbados Museum and Historical Society’s 2012 Lecture Series which will be held under the theme This the time to Knock on the Door of Your Government, a statement expressed by National Hero, the Right Excellent Clement Payne, shortly before the 1937 labour rebellion.
All lectures will be at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, Bridgetown, starting at 7:00 p.m.
Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Dr. George Belle, will deliver the first lecture on Tuesday, February 7, entitled Labour on the Move: Global Labour Organisation and Protest in the 1920s and 1930s.
On Tuesday, February 14, Principal of Queen’s College and Historian, Dr. David Browne, will speak on Seedbed for Protest: Barbados in the 1920s and 1930s, while Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of the UWI Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, will discuss The British Caribbean Labour Rebellions, 1934 – 1939, An Overview, on Tuesday, February 28.
"Blackest Week in the Colony’s History": "The Monster of Lawlessness" Rears its Head in and around Golden Square is the topic lecturer in History in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Dr. Henderson Carter, will address on Tuesday, March 6. One week later, on Tuesday, March 13, Professor Emeritus Sir Woodville Marshall will discuss "Blackest Week in the Colony’s History": "More Purposive" Lawless Action in the Country Districts.
Senior lecturer in History in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Dr. Aviston Downes, will examine The Anatomy of Discontent: The Deane and Moyne Commissions on Tuesday, March 20, while Historian and CARICOM Ambassador, Robert "Bobby" Morris, will look at Exploiting the Moment: The Emergence of New Political Organisations and a New Political Elite, on Tuesday, March 27.
The lecture, Transforming a Frightful Orgy of Hooliganism into "a National Day of Significance", by Co-ordinator of the Cultural Studies Programme, Dr. Marcia Burrowes, will bring the curtain down on the series on Tuesday, April 3.
