Ten lectures are on the cards for the Barbados Museum and Historical Society’s 2013 Lecture Series which will be held from March 14 to May 16, under the theme The Emancipation Project – 1838 -1937.
All lectures will be at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, The City, beginning at 7:00 p.m. and members of the public are encouraged to attend.
Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, will deliver the first lecture on Thursday, March 14, entitled Emancipation Economics: Financial Compensation for Enslavers and Legal Freedom for the Enslaved.
On Thursday, March 21, Principal of Queen’s College and Historian, Dr. David Browne, will speak on The Anatomy/Survival of White Power, while Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Bentley Gibbs, will discuss Constructing a Wage Labour Force on Thursday, March 28.
Emerging Features of a New Class Structure is the topic lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy at the UWI, Dr. Aviston Downes, will address on Thursday, April 4. One week later, on Thursday, April 11, Professor Emeritus Sir Woodville Marshall will look at Expansion of Residential Spaces.
Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy, Dr. Henderson Carter, will examine Anatomy of Protest: Flight and Fight on Thursday, April 18, while Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Professor Pedro Welch will discuss Family Structures/Living In Sin on Thursday, April 25.
Retired Educator, Dr. Janice Mayers, will look at New Educational Provision on Thursday, May 2, while lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy, Dr. Tara Inniss, will speak on Beyond the Hot House: Mortality and Morbidity on Thursday, May 9.????
Patterns of Black Culture, to be delivered by lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy, Dr. Marcia Burrowes, will bring the curtain down on the discussions on Thursday, May 16.
The lecture series is also being sponsored by UWI’s Department of History and Philosophy, the National Cultural Foundation, the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited, Central Bank of Barbados, Sagicor General Insurance Inc. and the Barbados Public Workers’ Cooperative Credit Union.
