Preserving our Heritage, Appreciating our Elderly is the theme selected by the National Assistance Board (NAB) to celebrate their 31st anniversary and Senior Citizens’ Month, next month.

To mark these occasions, the Board will host a number of events, including training sessions for members of staff and seminars in two of the island’s secondary schools.

The celebrations will also include the official opening of?? the Carrington Wesleyan Holiness Church’s Senior Recreational Activities Programme at Welches, St. Michael, which is?? scheduled to take place next Thursday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m.

On Wednesday, September 14, the NAB will host a seminar on Home and Community-based Care for Older Persons at the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), Dayrells Road, St. Michael. The event will coincide with the Senior Citizens’ Health Expo, which will be staged on the St. Matthias Anglican Church grounds, St. Matthias, Christ Church, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Expo will feature a lecture by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, breast screening by the Barbados Cancer Society, health checks by the Diabetes Association of Barbados, food demonstrations by Marion Hart and a dancercise session. The public is invited to attend.

The NAB, which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Rural Development, aims "to maintain the dignity of elderly persons in Barbados, through the provision of an innovative range of social support and recreational services."
