The National Assistance Board (NAB) will celebrate 34 years of service to the elderly in Barbados with a number of activities, beginning in August and ending in October.
Events will commence with a church service this Sunday, August 24, at the James Street Methodist Church, Bridgetown, at 9:00 a.m.
Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steven Blackett, will deliver remarks at the service.
The following Sunday, August 31, Director of the NAB, Charyn Wilson; Chairman of the National Committee on Ageing, Maizie Barker Welch; and President of the Alzheimer???s Association, Camilla Burton, will appear on Brass Tacks to discuss a number of issues affecting seniors.
These include the ageing population in Barbados, social and health concerns, financial matters, active ageing and the National Policy on Ageing.
On Wednesday, September 10, at 10:00 a.m. there will be a Seniors Cricket Match at the 3W???s Oval, UWI, Cave Hill, under the patronage of Minister Blackett. The match will be between the President of Cave Hill 11 and the Legends 11.
There will also be a production sponsored by the Ministry of Social Care and the National HIV/AIDS Commission entitled: Safe today ??? Healthy Tomorrow on Saturday, September 27, at the Queen???s Park Steel Shed. It will feature a cast of persons aged 50 and over, and is opened only to persons in that age range.
Activities will culminate on Wednesday, October 1 – International Day for the Elderly – with a lecture entitled: Solutions for Active Ageing from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael.
Senator Professor Henry Fraser will deliver the lecture, while Social Care Minister, Steven Blackett, will deliver a feature address at the event.
