Seniors in the St. Thomas area now have another option to assist them in their bid to age actively.

Speaking at the launch of the National Assistance Board’s (NAB) 17th recreational activities centre at the Proute Wesleyan Holiness Church, Director of the National Assistance Board, Charyn Wilson, explained that there was a reason for this population ageing phenomenon and there appears to be a strong connection between longevity and healthy ageing”.

She pointed out that in Barbados and around the world, people are living longer than in previous years, with many reaching or surpassing the 100-year milestone. She noted that Barbados recently toasted a super centenarian who celebrated her 110th birthday.

Making reference to a report published by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention which emphasises the importance of taking care of ourselves as we enter our advanced years, Ms Wilson explained that staying healthy as we age involves mental and social well-being, as well as a balanced diet and exercise.

While she recognised that persons become less active as they get older, the Director cautioned that it was equally important to remember that physical activity can improve the overall health and well-being of older adults.

Activities to be carried out at this latest centre include dancercise, exercise, crafts, lectures, seminars for mental stimulation and socialisation activities. Additionally, twice a year, the National Assistance Board brings together participants at all the recreational centres for a social event.
