As persons again join the international community to observe World AIDS Day 2011 on Thursday, December 1st, the National HIV/AIDS Commission, in conjunction with Brydens, will be spearheading a National Food Bank drive on the day.

Several "drop off points" will be setup this Thursday, making it easier for members of the public to deliver their contributions to this island wide Food Bank initiative.

Director, Jacqueline Wiltshire Gay noted that " Barbadians can take their non-perishable or monetary contributions to: the Warrens Office Complex; UWI Cave Hill Campus; Super Centre, Holetown; Jordan’s Supermarket, Speightstown; The Glebe playing field, St. George; Emerald City Supermarket, Six Roads; Oistins Bay Gardens, Jordan’s Supermarket, Fairchild Street; and the Food Bank, Jemmotts Lane".

The stations will be collecting items between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and the Commission is encouraging all Barbadians to wear something red on Thursday, to show their support for the people living with HIV and commemorate those who have died.

World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1st each year and in the face of a disease for which there is still no cure, has become one of the most recognized days on the international health calendar.?? It also offers a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate the victories such as increased access to treatment, care and prevention services.
