Hazards that can affect Barbados, and the best ways of dealing with them, will be in the limelight tomorrow, Thursday, March 28, when the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) stages an all-day National Hazard Mitigation workshop.

The workshop will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Hastings, Christ Church, with an opening ceremony beginning at 9:00 a.m.

A release from DEM indicated that participants attending the workshop are expected to review the risk status of Barbados as it relates to hazards, identify gaps in the country’s information base and look at implications for the safety of the population, economic stability and sustainability.

It is also expected to identify plans for risk reduction, achievements, stakeholder interest and build awareness on hazard mitigation and planning as being critical to ensuring public safety and the economic stability of Barbados.

Topics to be covered include an Introduction to Mitigation, the Risk Status of Barbados, Hazard Mitigation Planning, and the Way forward for Risk Reduction.

By the end of the workshop, it is expected that a systematic process of continuous learning about hazards affecting the island would be established, clear goals set and appropriate actions identified and addressed through effective mitigation planning.
