Governor General, Sir Clifford Husbands

For the first time, Independence Square will be the venue for the annual National Independence Service, which comes off this Sunday, November 23.

In previous years it was held at the Sherbourne Conference Centre, now the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Several dignitaries and members of the public will meet and give God praise for attaining 42 years of statehood. Governor General, Sir Clifford Husbands; Prime Minister David Thompson; and Chief Justice, Sir David Simmons, will head the list of officials attending. Other members of the judiciary, Parliamentarians, the social partnership, the diplomatic corps, service organisations, the private sector, NGOs and civil society are also expected to attend.

Highlights of the service, which gets under way at 4:00 p.m. are: the worship session; scripture readings; presentations by the Amalgamated Mass Choir; and intercessory prayers.  The Revered Eliseus Joseph will offer prayers for the nation, followed by the Revered Stephen Gittens who will pray for the youth of the nation, and the Revered Colton Bennett will conclude the session with a pray for peace.

Anglican Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Dr. the Hon. John Holder, will give the Benediction and Blessing, while Bishop Martin Brewster of the New Testament Church of God will deliver the main address.
The service will be carried live on radio and television. (AR)
