Barbadians are being encouraged to support the National Sports Council’s (NSC) Inter-Parish Road Tennis Tournament which will be continuing over the next three weeks.

The players in the St. Michael area will compete in the juniors, seniors and masters categories tomorrow, Tuesday, December 21, at Belfield; and on Wednesday, December 22, at Bush Hall.

??The preliminaries for all categories and parishes are slated for Sunday, December 26, at Bush Hall, St. Michael; while the quarter finals will be on Wednesday, December 29, at Road View, St. Peter. The semi-finals will be at Vauxhall Primary, Christ Church, on Saturday, January 1, 2011; while the finals will be at Dover, Christ Church, on Saturday, January 8. ?? All games will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Approximately 50 road tennis players are competing in this tournament.

Giving the rationale for the competition, the NSC Director, Erskine King, said it was created to raise the profile of road tennis, as well as encourage greater cooperation among communities across the island.

He added that the Council "is excited" about the new project. "The inter-parish competition is a great way of bringing people together, particularly in the evenings. With the Council having road tennis courts in every parish, it certainly would help with proper utilisation of those facilities to the benefit of all – the very young to the very old. Those who will not be actively participating in the competition can become active spectators in support of their respective parishes," Mr. King suggested.

Meanwhile, the tournament will also be played in the tourism belt, so as to allow visitors to the island a chance to watch the matches.??saustin@barbados.gov.bb
