Those persons with disabilities (PWDs) who plan to enter the Barbados Council for the Disabled’s National Literary Competition have until next Friday to submit their entries.

The competition is opened to PWDs in two age groups – 16 to 21 and 21 years and over- and individuals should submit presentations either in prose, drama/play or poetry.?? The entries should be typed, on CD, audio tape or Braille.??

Entrants have a choice of eight topics, which are based on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, but can only submit one entry.?? A full list of these topics may be obtained by calling the Council at 427-8163.

The winners in each category will be part of the Council’s delegation to attend an international conference, where they will experience on-going deliberations of key issues relating to PWDs, while those placing second will receive computers with assistive devices. Third place participants will be awarded bank accounts and training.?? A special prize will be awarded for the best poem.

Entries must be original and written in Standard English, although dialect may be permitted in the context of writing.?? Essays and dramas should be at least 750 words and no more than 1500 words, while for verse; entries should not exceed two A4 pages.????

Submissions must be accompanied by a cover page with the name of entrant, age, address, telephone number, category of disability, title of entry and the entrant’s signature.?? Those PWDS who are unable to sign can have an authorised person do so on their behalf.?? They should reach the Barbados Council for the Disabled by 4:00 p.m. on Friday February 5, and should be in a sealed envelope labeled "BCD UN National Literary Competition 2010", c/o Barbados Council for the Disabled, Harambee House, Garrison, St. Michael.
