The Ministry of Health’s National Nutrition Centre will observe National Nutrition Week from Sunday, May 27, to Friday, June 1, this year under the theme, Saving Our Future – Protecting Our Children from Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases.

The programme for the week will begin with a church service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church on Sunday, May 27, at 8:00 a.m. Representatives from the Centre will visit a number of primary schools throughout the week to promote the use of local fruits and vegetables, as well as the benefits of regular physical activity.

The scheduled visits are as follows: On Tuesday, May 29, St. Bartholomew’s Primary School, Christ Church, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and St. Lukes-Brighton Primary School, St. George, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; Thursday, May 31, the Anne Hill School, Pine Road, St. Michael, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and Friday, June 1, The Boscobel Primary School, St. Peter, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

In addition, there will be a presentation for supervisors and assistant supervisors of the Child Care Board on Wednesday, May 30, at 10:00 a.m. and on Friday, June 1, Caribbean Nutrition Day, popular chef Peter Edey of Junior Duelling Chefs fame, will host a cooking session for primary school pupils at The Dining Club, Newton Industrial Park, Christ Church, to promote the use of local fruits and vegetables.

The Centre conducts and participates in activities to improve the dietary health of all Barbadians. The activities carried out and promoted by the management and staff of the Centre are aimed at educating the public, especially children, on basic changes which can be made through diet and exercise to reduce their risks of developing Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases.
