The National Sports Council (NSC) will soon be ???serving up’ an Inter-Parish Road Tennis Competition which will give players an opportunity to show off their skills, while vying for great prizes.

Director of NSC, Erskine King, disclosed that the new initiative would be played next month as part of the activities in the run-up to Independence Day on November 30. It will feature 12 teams (two for St. Michael and one each per parish) throughout the island and they are expected to compete in six categories – junior boys and girls, senior men and women and masters’ men and women.

Mr. King said the finals could possibly be played at the Springer Memorial School or the Netball Stadium, adding that the semi-finals and finals winners would receive cash prizes. He noted that the Council was still soliciting sponsorship for the parishes, pointing out the company’s name would be added to that of the parish team.??

?????????????????? Giving the rationale for the competition, the Director explained that it was created to raise the profile of road tennis, as well as encourage greater cooperation among communities across the island.

He added that the Council "is excited" about the new project. "The inter-parish competition is a great way of bringing people together, particularly in the evenings. With the Council having road tennis courts in every parish, it certainly would help with proper utilisation of those facilities to the benefit of all – the very young to the very old.

"Those who will not be actively participating in the competition can become active spectators in support of their respective parishes," Mr. King surmised.

Meanwhile, the tournament will also be played in the tourism belt, so as to allow visitors in the south and west coast of the island a chance to watch the matches. saustin@barbados.gov.bb
