Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo??

Close to 1000 young people will be exposed to several sporting disciplines over the next three months as part of Government’s National Sports Training Programme.???? ??

It will be launched this Saturday, January 9, at Ellerton Playing Field, Ellerton, St. George, and Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, will deliver an address.

???? ??The programme caters to people between the ages of nine and 20 years and the sports will include football, netball, cricket, basketball, volleyball and hockey. This annual event began in 1996 by the Division of Youth.

???? ??Principal Youth Development Officer in the Division, Colin Clarke, described the programme as an intervention strategy to get young people more involved in various sporting activities.

"We encourage the youth who are a part of the programme to form clubs and teams at the community level. This project has helped many of them to develop their skills, particularly if they went on to play for their schools, or in some cases, their country," Mr. Clarke asserted.

He stressed that it would create synergies for youngsters to work with and compete against each other within various communities.

Mr. Clarke disclosed that former Barbados cricket captain, Ryan Hinds, and outstanding volleyball player and captain, Shernell Beckles-Pooler, participated in the programme at some point. He also noted that some of the teams, which were formed out of the programme, went on to play in the Barbados Football Association’s Junior Tournament and in the netball championships.

Young people who are interested in participating in the National Sports Training Programme should contact the Division of Youth at telephone numbers 430-2813 and 430-2799.

It will climax on March 13 with an all-day sports rally at the Deighton Griffith School. saustin@barbados.gov.bb
