The National Stadium is scheduled to be completed by the first week of March 2013.

This assurance came from Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, over the weekend as he addressed the National Sports Council’s 30th annual awards ceremony at the Frank Collymore Hall, The City.

Mr. Lashley told his audience that the track segment of the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships would be held shortly after the completion of the work.

He acknowledged that there had been much unwarranted speculation and misinformation about the refurbishment of the National Stadium and the hosting of this year’s athletic championships.

"I assure you that the development of our athletes remains a top priority for my Ministry and for the Council. In collaboration with the Athletic Association of Barbados, we have always had a contingency plan to ensure the hosting of the championships, and that our athletes are not adversely impacted," he pointed out.

Work on the stadium started last August, but was delayed at intervals because of the inclement weather the island experienced. The work being done includes the re-laying of the athletic track and the correction of its angles, upgrades to the football field and improved drainage and bathrooms.
