With the acquisition of a greenhouse and a shade house, the National Conservation Commission (NCC) will, as of next month, be affording Barbadian youth intensive training in Plant Propagation.

Word of this has come from Ryan Brathwaite, NCC’s Technical Officer, who says it will go beyond the school tours currently being offered.

“Schools usually come in and tour the NCC, but, of course, this will be a more intense programme. With the existing greenhouse and shade house they can actually come in and benefit from in depth training,” he explained.

Mr. Brathwaite, who is also Project Co-ordinator for an ongoing ‘Capacity Building for Youth in Sustainable Land Management Project’ said the training would also be available to “churches, youth groups, 4-H clubs and members of the public”.

As part of that project, he revealed that the Commission would also be donating greenhouses, shade houses and irrigation tanks to three schools as a contribution to their individual programmes.

To date, a total of 12 schools, including primary and secondary, have participated in the two-year programme, undergoing training in Plant Propagation and Information Technology.
