Barbados’ south and east coasts are once again inundated by the sargassum seaweed.

And, while the National Conservation Commission (NCC) already has daily cleanups in place along beaches on the south coast, it is encouraging individuals and community groups to help with the process.

Interested persons or groups may contact the NCC at 425-1200, and submit their contact details so the necessary arrangements can be made.

Speaking during an interview with the Barbados Government Information Service, General Manager at the NCC, Keith Neblett, said the seaweed was “coming in big quantities”, primarily on beaches at Skeetes Bay, St. Philip; Bath, St. John; Bathsheba, St. Joseph; and Silver Sands, Welches, Enterprise and Accra Beach, in Christ Church.

He noted that over the last few weeks, the NCC had been conducting daily cleaning exercises at beaches populated by locals and visitors, and would be deploying additional teams from tomorrow, Thursday, May 3.

In addition, the NCC will receive help from the Soil Conservation Commission this weekend to clear the beach at River Bay, St. Lucy. Cleanups will also be conducted at Barclays Park and other areas along the east coast on May 3.

However, Mr. Neblett said it was difficult to clean Skeetes Bay because the seaweed was in the surf. “We usually have to wait until it comes on the beach before we can take it up,” he explained.
