The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) will host its first ever Farmers’ Market, this coming Saturday, June 26, starting at 6:30 a.m. on the NCF’s grounds, West Terrace, St. James.

It promises to be one of the largest community markets, with several farmers, agriculturists, local confectioners, and craft persons participating in the event. There will be a variety of produce on sale as well as products and services available.

The market will comprise two additional sections: the Caribbean Breakfast and Sweets Garden.

For the Caribbean Breakfast, dishes from St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Dominica, Guyana and Curacao will be on show for patrons. Delicacies will range from roti and curry to buljol.

The Sweets Garden, which will involve several NIFCA award winners in the confectionery category, will see local treats such as sugar cakes, nut-brittle and lead pipes for sale.

According to an NCF official, the farmers’ market will provide attendees with competitive prices for local produce. "It will seek to serve as that Saturday’s market of choice for the surrounding community and other Barbadians, who typically shop for produce in other markets," she said.

The activity commences with an early morning session called ???Crop-Over Socacise @ Sunrise’. NCF Dance Officer, Danny Hinds will start the exercise sessions, while all others will be conducted by professional fitness instructors.

The National Conservation Commission will also mount an elaborate exhibition of plants, flowers and foliage, as well as offer such items for sale to the public.

Calypsonians and masquerade bands will also be on hand to sell their music and promote their Crop-Over bands.

The NCF official added that this was the first year the Farmers’ Market ??was being held, and hoped that the event would become a permanent annual fixture on the Crop-Over events’ calendar. askeete@barbados.gov.bb
