Lessons in preparing fine cuisine, financial management, as well as creative sessions in drumming, dance and folk songs, will be on the cards when the National Council on Substance Abuse’s (NCSA), annual one-week residential Project S.O.F.T (Safeguarding Our Future Today), summer camp programme, gets under way next week.
Beginning on Monday, August 20, at Marian Retreat House, Verdun, St. John, 40 campers will receive insight into conflict resolution and decision making, stress management, adolescent development, abstinence, and a myriad of other topics.
According to Community Programme Officer at the NCSA, Makeada Greenidge, the camp, now in its 11th year, targets young people who completed the Common Entrance Examination, with a view to preparing them for entry into secondary school by discussing the multiple life challenges that will confront them.
"This year, the theme is ???You! Me! We! Choose to make Barbados Drug Free’, with a focus on making positive choices and we want to address such issues like: self-esteem building, substance abuse, as well as hygiene and daily life skills," she explained.????????????
On Wednesday, August 22, campers will participate in a Mini Sports Day at King George V Memorial Park from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
The following day, Thursday, August 23, Consultant Richard Thomas of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, will discuss Money Management, beginning at 9:00 a.m. In the afternoon, a creative session featuring drumming, dance, drama and sign language will get under way from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The youngsters will be treated to a tour of the Dining Club, at Newton, Christ Church by Chef Peter Edey and learn about preparing healthy meals on Friday, August 24, from 10:00 a.m. until noon.
Campers and other officials will kick-start their Saturday with a hike, beginning at 6:00 a.m. at Marian Retreat House.
The camp ends on Sunday, August 26.
