Some 50 staff members of the Food and Beverage department of Hilton Barbados got an opportunity to learn about the legal implications of serving alcohol during a half-day workshop hosted by the National Council on Substance Abuse (NCSA), yesterday morning at the hotel’s Needhams Point location.

The educational and interactive session was one of the many community outreach programmes currently being undertaken by the NCSA.

Staff members were given information about the laws of Barbados as they relate to the serving of alcohol, the responsibility of a person who serves alcohol and the signs and symptoms of an intoxicated individual.

Manager of the NSCA, Yolande Forde, thanked the Hilton Barbados for taking part in the workshop and extended the invitation to other hotels, restaurants and bars on the island to be a part of a similar exercise.

She added that it was the responsibility of the NCSA to devise projects which could prevent and control the use of illegal drugs and other potentially harmful substances like alcohol and tobacco.

Programme Officer at the NCSA, Paulavette Atkinson, who was one of the presenters at the workshop said that such progammes could be very beneficial.

"It is critical to work within the workplace which is a microcosm of the entire community.?? We want to make sure that families and communities can benefit from this training.

"This information will provide great research for the NCSA, in terms of finding out the type of drug related issues [out there].?? With this information we can tailor programmes better for persons affected by alcohol or those who may be using alcohol," Ms. Atkinson explained.??
