The National Council on Substance Abuse (NCSA) supports the decriminalization of marijuana for medical purposes.

Manager of the NCSA, Betty Hunte, made this disclosure during a press conference at the agency’s Belleville, St. Michael location, recently.

“We understand that it will be properly supervised by medical health personnel, who are properly trained under strict supervision and strict legal provisions,” she said.

However, she noted that support for the recreational use of marijuana would require further discussion in-house and with the agency’s partners.

“The Prime Minister has indicated that it will be by referendum, so we will wait for that referendum,” she said.

Mrs. Hunte, however, gave the undertaking that the agency would remain vigilant to ensure that the drug was being used in accordance with the law.
