Come Thursday, March 5, the National Disabilities Unit (NDU) will begin a series of community outreach events to raise awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities and to inform persons of its services. This forms part of its activities for the Month of the Disabled.

These activities will take place in rural areas across the country and will run from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

On Thursday, staff of the NDU and members of the Diabetic Association will be in Speightstown at the Esplanade and will be providing persons with the opportunity to have blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks. There will also be talks on disabilities, and the distribution of brochures on the NDU as well as leaflets on Aquatic Day (March 11) and the Special Envoy on Disabilities Fun Ride on March 14.

The following Thursday, March 12, NDU officials will journey to Emerald City at Six Roads, St. Philip. Persons visiting the area will be able to have HIV testing done and will be provided with various literature.

On Friday, March 20, accompanied by members of the Stroke Support Group, NDU staff will visit the Belleplaine Playing Field in St. Andrew. Information on the prevention of strokes and the services of the Unit will be distributed. Minister of Social Care, Christopher Sinckler, is expected to pay a visit to the area.

The final outreach activity for the month will take place on Thursday, March 26, at the Gall Hill Playing Field in St. John, where members of the disabled community will participate in paralympics and blind cricket.
