A separate Female Admissions Unit will be opened next month at the Psychiatric Hospital in Black Rock, St. Michael to ease the burden on the current Acute Admissions Unit there.

The new Unit is designed to be an acute care section, but with a greater emphasis on creating a modern therapeutic environment for the patients.

According to officials at the hospital, "this additional facility is in keeping with current international trends and management at the Psychiatric Hospital is seeking, wherever possible, to reduce the number of patients on individual wards.?? The new ward has been designed to carry no more than 25 to 30 patients".

The Female Admissions Unit will be officially opened along with its Quarter-way House facility at a launching ceremony on Wednesday, June 1, at 10:00 a.m. Minister of Finance, Christopher Sinckler will give opening remarks, while Minister of Health, Donville Inniss will deliver the feature address and unveil the plaque.

The Quarter-way House facility was conceptualised as "a needed transition for some of the long stay patients to aid them in the process of reintegration into the wider society".??

It is intended to provide transitional living services to clients recovering from addictive and psychiatric illnesses.

Together, the two facilities represent part of the Greater Hospital’s Redevelopment Programme.
