The obligations of Government’s Human Resource Development Strategy (HRDS) are being fulfilled with the opening of the new Deacons Development Facility and BVTB Deacons Training Centre at Deacons Farm, St. Michael.

Lauding the launch of this new facility "as a major step towards the expansion and provision of quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)", Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, recently pointed out that the HRDS called for the expansion of TVET and the improvement of participation in adult and continuing education.

She delivered these remarks at the opening ceremony for the Deacons Development Facility & BVTB Deacons Training Centre last weekend.??

According to Dr. Byer Suckoo: "The opening of this centre is therefore timely as we seek to further promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training as an area of pursuit for our young people.?? The ability of the Barbados Vocational Training Board (BVTB) to meet its obligations under the Barbados Human Resource Development Strategy will also be greatly enhanced by the availability of these facilities."

Noting that BVTB was forced to close its Six Roads and St. Patrick’s centres, she said they were hopeful that the Six Roads Centre would be re-opened later in this financial year.?? However, St. Patricks was "totally unsuitable for habitation so the search was on to find a location to deliver training in the heart of the community."

The Labour Minister noted that the opening of this centre, in the Deacons district, demonstrated Government’s intention to make education and training more accessible to all Barbadians.

She added: "By actively teaching technical and vocational skills in communities, we open opportunities for learning by making it easier for persons not only to reach the learning facilities, but also to have a point of reference in the community which encourages them to develop high aspirations.

"BVTB is very cognisant of the important role it plays, not only as a deliverer of Technical and Vocational Education and Training, but also as an agency which drives human resource development capacity in this country," Dr. Byer Suckoo stressed.??
