Backed by a $65 million initial injection, and the hope of creating more than 200 new jobs, Karib cable is promising to deliver business at the speed of light.?? Moreover, it has the full support of government who issued a challenge to all entrants to give the Barbadian public value for money.
Karib Cable officially rolled out its service and outlined the benefits of using the fiber optic cable system during a press launch at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Garrison Historic Area, Hastings, Christ Church recently.
In the feature address, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Energy and Telecommunications, Senator Darcy Boyce, noted that the provision of a fast, reliable internet service was crucial to business and societal development.
In this regard, he said granting Karib Cable a licence to operate in Barbados was only the beginning. "Having granted Karib Cable the various licences to operate, we now expect it to aggressively implement its plans as promised, to offer Barbadians high quality information and communications services at competitive rates."
Senator Boyce further stated: "We in the telecommunications Division subscribe to the view that a few more service providers may be permitted to enter the local market, as long as they have the technical and financial ability to actually roll out and operate the proposed new service.?? And, their business models must show a good chance of success and sustainability over the long run."
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Karib Cable, Kelly Glass, said the company, which also has operations in seven Caribbean islands would build a ???future-proof’ network in Barbados that was "second to none in the Americas".
"In an age where technology was always changing and there is a constant increase in the demand for speed…people have become increasingly impatient with having to wait while a piece of video buffers or a web page takes a few seconds to load.?? So, we have to understand the direction of people’s expectations and not be outpaced by such," he stressed.
Karib Cable is expected to set up operations in Barbados over the next four months.
