The Prime Minister David Thompson today received a courtesy call from China’s new ambassador to Barbados, Mr. Wei Qiang, at Ilaro Court.

In welcoming the ambassador, the Prime Minister said the relationship between the two countries was "a very special one" and that China was considered "very high in our priorities".

To this end, he added that Government was working assiduously on establishing an embassy in China, which would be headed by Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford.

The Prime Minister further stressed that the relationship would be strengthened by the involvement of the private sector, and this was being spearheaded through Invest Barbados.

Mr. Thompson thanked the Chinese emissary for his Government’s contribution of equipment to the newly formed Constituency Councils and said that he especially valued this assistance.

In turn, Ambassador Wei said his country was very satisfied with the relations between the two nations, and cited the proposed establishment of an embassy in September, as a pertinent example of this.

He said that China attached great importance to the friendship and support of of Barbados, in particular with regard to the One-China policy, and indicated that his country was interested in furthering these relations. Ambassador Wei noted that other areas of technical cooperation would be explored.

Talks also centred on CARICOM and the CARICOM Development Fund, the Empire Theatre, the educational exchange programme and the important contribution of Chinese enterprises in Barbados.
