The Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) has introduced a new method of collection for the fourth quarter of the Continuous Labour Force Sample Survey.

This disclosure has come from the Director of the BSS, Aubrey Browne, who said this system of Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) uses tablets for data collection, as opposed to paper and pencil interviewing, which the department has utilized over the years.

Mr. Browne has urged those householders participating in the October to December sample survey to exercise patience with the field officers as they manage this transition in seeking to provide relevant, timely and reliable national statistics.

Emphasizing the importance of the CAPI, the Director said: “This new system allows the BSS to modernize the way it captures information. Because the information is captured in an electronic format, the data is available for processing in a speedier manner.

“With the paper and pen approach, data entry operators have to enter the information into the computer and that takes time.  In addition, there is the possibility for errors to occur during the data entry process.”

He explained that the tablets have built-in edit features that would help the field officer to minimize errors in recording the information obtained from respondents.
