Children across Barbados can expect to have their rights defended and supported further with the re-launch of the National Committee for Monitoring the Rights of the Child within a few days.

An official ceremony will be held next Wednesday, May 27, in the main conference room of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Elsie Payne Complex. Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, will deliver the feature address.

The 10-member Committee was appointed by Cabinet in May last year for a three-year period. Its chairman is Hulbert Blackett, Senior Manager at NCH Action for Children, which is a non-governmental organisation.

The first Committee was established in 1998, and its terms of reference include: monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child; observing the progress of children in relation to the Convention; and coordinating policies and making recommendations aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of the child.

Additionally, the Committee will review and update the 1992 National Plan of Action and prepare an alternative document with a view to making it relevant to this time period.
