The submission deadline for the Central Bank of Barbados’ 50th anniversary essay competition has been extended to May 31, 2022. Students and schools will have until 9:00 p.m. on that date to submit their entries through the portals on the competition’s website.

“We recognise that students and schools are trying to balance participating in the competition with examination preparation, so we’ve made the decision to push back the deadline,” explained Darrin Downes, Chair of the Bank’s Anniversary Planning Committee.

“We want all schools and eligible students across Barbados to be able to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by the competition, which not only allows students to learn more about the Bank while at the same time honing their writing skills, but also gives them and their schools to win very attractive prizes.”

The first prize winner in the primary school category, where students in classes three and four are being asked to write on A Day as the Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados,” will receive $1,500 in cash, while the top entrant in the secondary school category will receive $2,000 in cash.

The students in that category, which encompasses fifth and sixth form students, including those attending the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology and the Barbados Community College, will have to pen an essay on The Role of the Central Bank in the National Development of Barbados.” In addition to the cash prize, the winners in each category will receive a tablet and a trophy, and the winning school will also receive a prize.

“We’ve provided some reference materials to assist entrants with their research. For primary school students, we’ve produced a child-friendly video series, while secondary school students will find our CBB 101 video series particularly useful.”

The essay competition is part of the Bank’s golden anniversary celebrations, which are being held under the theme “Living the Legacy: Continuing the Journey.” All queries about the competition and the celebrations should be sent to cbb50@centralbank.org.bb.
