Barbados has a new Senator. He is 60-year old Reginald Aldine Hunte. He took the oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen, before Governor-General, Sir Clifford Husbands, during a ceremony today at Government House.

The new Senator, a former Justice of the Peace, is a volunteer coordinator with Kensington Oval Management Incorporated (KOMI).?? He has been involved in politics for some 43 years.

On welcoming the new appointee, Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy, said it was "a very splendid day for the country and a good birthday gift". He indicated that Mr. Hunte was "no stranger to debates and would be doing in the Upper Chamber what he had been doing for a long time."

In his remarks, the Senator said he planned to give support to the policies and programmes of Government. "I intend to be very vigorous in my debates and to take the high moral ground…Parliament is about discussing the people’s business," he maintained.

The official ceremony was also witnessed by Mr. Hunte’s sister Brenda Dawson and children Nina and Omar Hunte.
