SENIOR MINISTER AND MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, DAME BILLIE MILLER, MEETING THE HONORARY CONSUL FOR BARBADOS IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, TIJANI BABATUNDE FOLAWIYO AT PARLIAMENT BULILDINGS.

Barbados now has its first Honorary Consul in Lagos, Nigeria; he is Nigerian businessman, Tijani Babatunde Folawiyo. This is the first appointment by the Government of Barbados of an Honorary Consul from the continent of Africa.

Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Dame Billie Miller, said that Mr. Folawiyo’s appointment “represents an important achievement for the Ministry and it is hoped that it will result in increased contact and exchanges between Barbados and Nigeria in the first instance and between Barbados and Africa as a whole”.

Dame Billie congratulated Mr. Folawiyo on his new position when he held talks with her recently at the Parliament Buildings. She stated that her Ministry was looking forward to working closely with him to strengthen relations with Nigeria.

He noted that his country could reap significant benefits from forging closer relations with Barbados, particularly in engaging in teacher exchange programmes.

Mr. Folawiyo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics, and a Bachelor of Laws degree. He is the Group Executive Director of the Yinka Folwawiyo Group and Managing Director of the Yinka Petroleum Company, which are both successful family businesses.

Nigeria was the first African nation to establish relations with Barbados, doing so on April 24, 1970.  This country’s relations with Nigeria have evolved mainly in a multilateral context through organs such as the United Nations, the African Caribbean and Pacific grouping, and particularly in the Commonwealth.  Also, Barbados has welcomed Nigerian Heads of State on official visits to the country on two previous occasions, in 1974 and 2002.
