About 120 young people between the ages of 16 and 22 will soon get an opportunity to develop life skills, while gaining some valuable work experience in the process.

The Barbados Youth Service (BYS) is now accepting applications for its programme which will commence on September 21, at Paragon, Christ Church.

Application forms should be collected and returned to the BYS Office, No. 33 Warrens Industrial Park, Warrens, or the Youth Development Programme Office in the Ministry of Education, Elsie Payne Complex, by Friday, August 29. Further information may be obtained by contacting the BYS Office at 310-4011.

The one year programme was started in 1991 and it seeks to develop young people in a holistic manner in three stages.

The first phase is residential, and for three months the youngsters will reside at Paragon and be exposed to such disciplines as academics, sports, arts and craft, cultural arts and personal development courses.

During the second phase, the trainees will complete 44 hours of community service and undertake a life skills programme in water safety and first aid with the Barbados Coast Guard. They will also focus on career development, which will prepare them for the third segment of the programme.

In this phase, once the young people meet the criteria, which includes good behavior and punctuality, they will go on job attachments in the public sector for 10 weeks. If they are successful, they will move on to the private sector.

Some 2000 young people have already participated in the programme.
