Barbados now has 70 new Justices of the Peace (JPs).

In a ceremony held at Government House earlier today, the new JPs, 47 men and 23 women, took the Oath of Allegiance and Judicial Oath before Acting Governor General, Sir Philip Greaves.

Sir Philip congratulated the new JPs on their appointment, and wished them well in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Among those sworn in today were Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steve Blackett; Minister of Industry, International Business, Commerce and Small Business Development, Donville Inniss; and Senators Harcourt Husbands and Andre Worrell.

Justices of the Peace are recommended by Members of Parliament. They are appointed by a Warrant issued by the Governor General and on the advice of the Prime Minister.

Among the many duties performed by JPs is signing and certifying the validity of copies of official documents.
