There are opportunities to strengthen the relations between Barbados and Russia, especially in areas such as tourism and trade.

This observation was made yesterday by Prime Minister David Thompson, while being paid a visit by Russian Ambassador Pavel Serguiev.

Mr. Thompson expressed an interest in exploring the potential for tourism expansion between the two countries, noting that the establishment of air links would be beneficial to both countries.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that given the increasing prices of commodities and oil, the possibility of expanding trading relations between Barbados and Russia needed to be considered. In this regard, he singled out high value added product such as special sugars, syrups and liqueurs.

The possibility of establishing a double taxation agreement, which would represent an initial step in attracting Russian investment, was also discussed.

Mr. Seruiev agreed with the suggestions, and recommended the organisation of a business mission so that the trade possibilities could be further explored.

The Russian envoy also proposed enhancing relations in the sphere of culture and having exchanges between members of Parliament in Barbados and Russia.

Diplomatic relations were established between the two countries in 1993.
