Government has this year carried out repairs at a cost of $750, 000 to 14 primary and nursery schools under its Domestic Summer Repair Programme.

Education Minister, Ronald Jones, toured some of the schools today and praised the contractors and workers for completing almost all the projects on time to meet the start of the new school year on September 8.

Work continues at only one school, St. Mark???s Primary, where the project is 95 per cent complete.??

The scope of work included repairs to roofs and ceilings, replacing floors, windows and ceilings, repair of windows and doors, construction of a covered walkway, electrical wiring and refurbishing of bathroom cubicles.

The schools involved in the programme were Bay Primary, Eden Lodge Primary, Good Shepherd Primary, Hillaby/Turners???s Hall Primary, Lawrence T, Gay Primary, Mount Tabor Primary, Sharon Primary, St. Alban???s Primary, St. Bernard???s Primary, St. Giles??? Nursery, St. Joseph Primary, St. Mark???s Primary, St. Silas Primary and Vauxhall Primary.

Also included in today???s tour was the Maria Holder Nursery School where major repair work is being undertaken by the Maria Holder Trust. Mr. Jones praised the Trust for its continuing commitment to this project as well as the others which it supports. He said that it was expected that work would commence this year on two new schools funded by the Trust.

Meanwhile, the Minister announced that Government expects to start construction of a new secondary school sometime next year as well as to replace several aging school plants over the next few years including Wesley Hall, Belmont Primary, St. Martins/Mangrove, Boscobelle Primary and St. Elizabeth Primary. Major enhancements are also planned for Wilkie Cumberbatch and St. Philip???s Primary.
