The Project Management Co-ordination Unit (PMCU), formerly the Solid Waste Project Unit, has launched a new interactive website to inform and educate Barbadians about proper solid waste management.
The website, www.solid.gov.bb, will provide an accessible technological interface between the PMCU and members of the general public. It replaces the old website, which was in existence from the late 1990s to the early 2000s and had become obsolete with advances in technology.
Addressing the launch at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre recently, Minister of Environment and National Beautification, Trevor Prescod, said the website was a 24-hour online resource of accurate information on “all aspects” of solid waste management. During the event, the PMCU also introduced its revamped board game dubbed, ‘Waste Busters’ which is being touted as ‘The Game that Puts Waste in its Place’.
Mr. Prescod disclosed: “It has been said that the power of information technology lies in its ability to provide a cost-effective platform for reaching out to people. This website is a perfect example of this. It will be an important tool in disseminating information about the work we are going to do to transform solid waste management and about our engagement initiatives with the stakeholders. Visitors to the site will also find useful tips, such as how to start their own composting programme to tackle the green waste we produce, as well as contact information for the active waste recyclers of the island.”
With regard to the board game, the Environment Minister said it was revamped to not only convey “a sound understanding of solid waste management decisions and their consequences, but also to produce a physical product that would be visually appealing, durable and comparable in quality to many of the well-established board games like Snakes and Ladders and Monopoly”.
He pointed out that the website and board game were only two facets of the Ministry’s commitment “to the improvement and enhancement or our physical environment”.
