There should be a new track at the National Stadium by this time next year.

This promise was made today by Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, to young athletes participating in the finals of the Pine Hill Dairy National Primary Schools’ Athletic Championship at the National Stadium.

Mr. Lashley told the athletes and their parents that funds had been allocated for the upcoming financial year and therefore, a new track would be laid.

Underscoring the importance of the games, the Minister said Government recognised that a robust sports industry necessitated a solid foundation at the primary level. "The National Primary Schools’ Athletic Championship is a fillip to establishing such a foundation and hence the Government will continue being supportive of these games," he told the Barbados Government Information Service after the opening ceremony.??

Director of the National Sports Council, Erskine King, expressed disappointment that all the primary schools had not competed in the championship this year and said he hoped the Ministry of Education would address the matter before the 2012 games.

Acting Chief Education Officer, Laurie King, said he was pleased the children were participating in this wholesome activity, while engaging in friendly rivalry.

Bayley’s Primary took the boys’ title, while Charles F. Broome placed second and West Terrace took the third spot. Christ Church Girls’ School won the girls’ title, while West Terrace placed second and Roland Edwards took the third position.
